Project Mission:

Overall project scheduling, including relocation actions and operational planning to support clinical and non-clinical units. Plan required accommodation of ongoing, continuous operations of operating rooms, emergency room, intensive case units, bed units, and all supporting activities. In furtherance of Equipment Planner's mission (Gene Burton & Associates) procured warehouse space and placed person on site to receive and assist with installation efforts. Executed many owner provided equipment installation tasks.

Challenges:

  • Expansion project executed in 7 phases involving an existing hospital, operating 24/7, with departments coming from 8 buildings on multiple floors. Due to interdependencies between units, operations changed 7 times over a 3-month period.
  • Adequate planning, training and orientation for the new building essential for the clinical, clinical support and other support units.
  • Joint Commission accreditation-ready status required on day one.
  • Detailed equipment plans required for new items, as well as for items to be moved by movers, UAB, third parties, and manufacturers. All actions required coordination and on site management.
  • Mover / installation services procurement action for 7-phase move and backfill projects.
  • Opening of over 37 operating rooms required detailed planning and resource allocation to support.

Value Added:

  • AOS was able to pull together construction, equipment, furniture, information technologies, and operational unit plans into a single plan and schedule. By expediting the move process, operational units were able to stay fully functional while maintaining customer and staff satisfaction -- while also keeping revenue-producing activities at almost normal levels. Procurement and management actions for equipment receipt, staging, move and installation services ensured that equipment was ready for activation.
